BTC 2018 Indoor Season Off to a Great Start!

Results from GVSU

A group of about 15 Breen athletes made the trek to GVSU Saturday. 5 athletes represented the club in the Gazelle Sports Elite Mile to start off a great day. Austin Remick (Rochester) started out the day with an outstanding 4:26.00 finishing in 12th in the elite mile field. Megan Worrel (Troy) led the girls in the elite mile with a 6th place finish in 5:00.30. She was followed by Hannah Palomino (Troy) finishing 8th in 5:06.90 and Elizabeth Dalrymple (Clarkston) finishing 12th in 5:12.80. Mallory Ferguson (Clarkston) ran 5:14.70 in the 1600 to punch her ticket to the state finals. Joining her in qualifying to the state finals was a pair of first time qualifiers in Meghan Monaghan (Troy) in 5:18.50 and Donald O’Keefe (Troy) in 4:34.00.

Austin(Rochester) would come back in the 800 meters and run a state qualifying 2:02.40 to finish a very nice day. In the girls 800 the Breen girls showed their talent and depth and had 4 girls under that state qualifying time including a state leading time. Megan Worrel (Troy) improved her state leading 800 time to 2:16.90 for the win. She was followed by Lauren Fulcher (Troy) joining the sub 2:20 club in only her second 800 ever and running 2:19.50.   2:22.70, and Mallory Furguson (Clarkston) 2:25.60 capped off an outstanding day for the distance races. The day wasn’t quite finished though as Lauren Fulcher (Troy) came back in the 60 hurdles right after the 800 and just missed her pr by .03 while running 9.48 and finishing 3rd.

Results from SVSU

A much larger field of about 70 athletes of Breen Track Club went to SVSU and got off to a great start with numerous first time participants, some early PR’s, and several state meet qualifying marks. The girls sprint medley relay of Callie Dickens (Clarkston), Javionna Davis (Rochester), Haley Puskar (Clarkston), Mia Patria (Clarkston) ran 4:41.25 to beat the qualifying time of 4:46. Also, the girls 4×400 relay of Bridget Cusick (Oxford), Karenna Duffey (L’Ance Creuse North), Antonia Vackaro (Oxford), Callie Dickens ran 4:26.91 to get under the 4:32 qualifying mark.

Individually, Dominic Bruce (Oxford) qualified for his first indoor state meet in style doing it in two events in one day, by running a 4:32.50 1600m and a 2:04.11 800m. Last years indoor state champion in the 1600m Karenna Duffey ran a season best of 5:07.99 to win the event.

Another first time qualifier was Sky Fugmann (Troy) with a huge foot plus personal best of 16-02.5 in the long jump, well over the 15-03 qualifying standard. A special mention for Hunter Green (Oxford) that ran two personal bests in the 1600m and 800m on his birthday, running 4:45 and 2:12! In the Girls 60 M high hurdles, two Breen runners qualified for the state championship with times that met the qualifying standard of 11.0 seconds. Erinn Costello (Groves), clocked a time of 10.47 in the final round. Haley Puskar ran an 11.0 in the preliminary round.

Several middle school athletes walked onto the indoor track stage for the first time, toeing up with high school runners. This can certainly be an intimidating environment, but the kids showed great confidence in their efforts. In the 1600m, Amanda Solden (Van Hoosen) and Kate Meinecke (Guardian Angels) lead the girls with a 5:45.45 and 5:45.56 effort. They were followed closely by Alaine Cusick (Oxford) and Jessica Jarski (Holy Family). Nathaniel Smith (Clarkston) had an outstanding effort as well, clocking a 5:17.24. He was followed by teammates Brendan Washburn (Hart) and Drew Kovacs (Smith). Erika Mann (Avondale) had a near personal record performance in the long jump, and came back with Javonaye Davis (Ruther) in the 60m dash to start their indoor track careers.

Breen Track Club will take a break this weekend, but be be back at it on January 19 at SVSU!

Registration is Now Open for 2018 Season!

The 2018 Indoor Track Season will begin very soon, and registration is now open for Breen Track Club! Here are some details to know for those that may be interested in joining the club.

Breen Track Club practices one day per week with optional meets on the weekend. We have recently reserved a field at Ultimate Soccer in Pontiac, and have scheduled our first practice Tuesday, December 19 . High school athletes will practice from 3:30-5:00pm, and middle school athletes will practice from 4:00-5:00. Members are strongly encouraged to run on their own on non-practice days, and should follow conditioning guides given to them by their respective high school coaches. We will offer training ideas upon request, but want to respect the respective programs being represented in the club. Meets are held around southeast Michigan where indoor tracks are available, including University of Michigan and Saginaw Valley State University among others locations.

Payment of $100 covers the indoor season and will be due at the first practice. Athletes will also be responsible for entrance fees if they choose to participate in weekly meets. For athletes that choose to compete, a new club singlet will be given to the athlete at no additional charge. A thank you goes out to Hanson’s Running Shop for the donation of the racing singlets.

Breen coaches are looking forward to a fun, fast season!
