The members of the Breen Track Club have had an outstanding indoor season and this weekend was just an example of the achievements we’ve seen all season. With Michigan Indoor Track State Finals at Aquinas College just two weeks away, the club has a lot to be excited about!
Action kicked off on Friday night at University of Michigan. The girls Sprint Medley Relay run by Quinn Thibault, Natalie Lambert, Alyssa Asmar came within 1.11 seconds of qualifying for state with a time of 4:41.11.
Austin Remick (4:29.37), Nick Favazza (4:36.89) and Kyle Johnson (4:37.90) finished 2nd, 5th, and 6th,, respectively in the boys 1600m run. Nick’s season PR qualified him for state meet.
In the 60m girls’ hurdles, Lauren Fulcher (9.96) and Alyssa Asmar (10:80) continue to perform faster than the state qualifying time of 11:00 seconds.
The club was able to qualify two girls Distance Medley Relay teams (1200, 400, 800, 1600) for the Michigan State meet. The both teams smashed state qualifying mark of 13:30.00. The team of Megan Worrel, Emily Ferguson, Katie Forsyth, Elizabeth Dalrymple won the event with a time of 12:22.24. The team of Mallory Ferguson, Lauren Fulcher, Hannah Palomino, and Grace Cutler came in second with at time of 12:32.38.
The boys DMR run by Austin Remick, Kyle Johnson, Nick Favazza came in 3rd at 11:18.51, just 1 second shy of hitting the state qualifying standard.
On Saturday, Breen Track Club showcased our distance talent at the 7th Annual Distance Festival at Saginaw Valley State University.
The girls qualified another Distance Medley Relay Team that included BTC athletes Lauren Kaliszewski and Amanda Lewis qualified with a time of 13:22.12. The boys’ DMR team of Dominci Bruce, Brandon Davis, Islam Aly, Andrew Dingwall was just 4 seconds from qualifying for state.
Breen’s middle distance strength was apparent in the 800m race. The girls dominated the event with 5 finishers in the top 10, including a 1-2-3 finish by Elizabeth Dalrymple (2:15.61), Megan Worrel (2:15.83) and Hannah Palomino (2:16.68), respectively. All three ladies finished under the New Balance National Emerging Elite standard of 2:16.80. Other top 10 finishers were Emily Ferguson (2:19.24) and 8th grader Shannon Billette (2:22.35).
Marcus Jackson won the boys 800m, leading through the entire race and achieving a career PR of 1:58.36.
The meet included a Middle School Mile, one of the few middle school only events available during the season. Maria Croci finished 4th with a season PR of 5:54.34. Her team mates Gia Leone (6:24.94) and Shannon Schulte (6:27.89) also achieved season personal bests.
The girls flexed their 800m muscle again in the 4x800m relay with teams finishing 1st, 3rd ,4th and 8th in the field of 10 teams. The first and third place teams qualified for state meets with times of 9:40.69 Elizabeth Dalrymple, Emily Ferguson, Shannon Billette, and Mallory Ferguson and 10:23.13 that included athletes Megan Worrel and Hannah Palomino.
The boys qualified a 4x800m relay, taking second in the event with a time of 8:25.32.
The club will be finishing up regular season competition this weekend at University of Michigan. A few athletes will also be competing this weekend at Grand Valley State University.
