Happy holidays and Happy New Year from Breen Track Club! Over the break, athletes from BTC did anything but rest. A handful of members went to work on the track, and set the tone for what looks to be another fantastic season. For the women, Megan Worrel, Elizabeth Dalrymple, Mallory Ferguson, and Emily Ferguson each qualified in their first 800m of the season running 2:22.95, 2:23.74, 2:25.09, and 2:25.86 respectively. In the 1600, Grace Cutler and Megan Worrel ran state qualifying times of 5:12.65 and 5:19.27. The women also put together a Distance Medley Relay Team that ran well under the 13:30 state qualifying time with a 13:06 performance that took 1st place by a wide margin at the 12/29 meet at University of Michigan.
For the men, Alex Ross has run qualifying times twice in the 3200m, with 9:56.4 being his best performance on 12/1 at EMU. In the 400m dash, Marcus Jackson and Brandon Davis finished close to the 52.5 qualifying time, running 53.7 and 53.94. Brandon came back the following week in the 800m run with a 2:06.22, followed closely by Kyle Johnson and Austin Remick. The qualifying time in that event is 2:04.5.
Several of our middle school athletes have also thrown themselves into competition early in the season. A commendable effort given that they have to compete right with the high school athletes. They have put themselves right into the pack, and have ran competitively with kids 4-5 years older than them. Kevin Blackburn has run just under 5:30 in the 1600, Kate Meinecke is nearing 13:00 in the 3200m, and Bo Anderson and Andrew Ferguson have battled with each other in the 400m, running the exact same time in that event.
We will be at it again on January 7, as BTC make the journey over to Grand Valley State University. Good luck to Elizabeth Dalrymple, who will be running in the Elite Mile event!
